Nineteen year old Joe Bennett came into the attack and
Glyn Edmonds was
dropped to the bench as Beeding started emphatically
enough, creating
chances against the West Sussex League opponents.
Stuart Barry was first to miss an opportunity, dragging
his cross shot wide
of Lee Montegues' right hand post after good work from
Terry Gretton and
Gary Salter.
Beeding then rattled Montegues' cross bar twice in a minute.
First Gary
Salters' shot had the Ship 'keeper beaten as his shot
rebounded to safety
from Barrys' cross and then Paul Barker saw his thirty
yard volley crash
against the bar and over for a goal kick.
Despite having all of the possession, Beeding could not
break the deadlock,
Gary Salter put wide from Bennetts' pass as The Ship
somehow got to the
interval with their goal intact.
The second period saw the Ship come back into the game
with Luke Rogers
forcing Scott Redfern into a good stop after Simon Friend
- James had lost
possession on the half way line.
At the other end Montegue performed heroics by keeping
out Barrys' close
range effort with an excellent one handed save.
Barry replaced Bennett with Edmonds and Gretton with Jamie
Ireson in an
attempt to avert the necessity for extra time and his
move was nearly
successful for all the wrong reasons.
With four minutes remaining, Beeding gave the ball away
from a throw in and
as the ball was laid forward Ireson completely missed
his kick allowing Mark
Irish to beat a static Redfern.
In a frantic conclusion to the half Beeding pressed on
and levelled with but
a minute left. Montegue found Edmonds's volley too hot
to hold and Simon
Friend - James was on hand to take the game into extra
time.
Three minutes into the extra period Beeding went ahead.
Edmonds was again at
the heart of a move which saw his delightful back heel
roll into the path of
Simon Friend - James who beat Montegue from the edge
of the box.
The second period saw the Ship wilt as Beedings' superior
fitness began to
tell. Mark Salters' trade mark free kick found brother
Gary at the far post
for 3-1 and Gary Salters' stooping header from Edmonds
right wing cross
completed the scoring
