Uckfield 3:3 Upper Beeding (H-T: 3-3)
Having done their utmost
to waste a 3-0 advantage against Hurstpierpoint
last week, Upper Beeding
persevered and managed to contrive a draw from
their visit to Uckfield
after finding themselves 3-0 to the good after just
29 minutes.
Manager Mick Barry would
be pulling his hair out, if he had any, after
another performance which
made a mockery of any of the locals beliefs that
they were destined for a
top three finish this year.
But they did start with purpose
and drive. Mark Salters' first minute free
kick was met by brother
Gary whose header fell just wide of Danny Handcocks'
left hand post.
However, the small group
of spectators did not have to wait long for the
opening strike. Stuart Barrys'
throw was returned to him via the head of
Simon Friend - James, and
the newly converted wing back delivered a deep
cross which Mat Doo controlled,
in acres of space, before beating Handcock
from eight yards.
A minute later Doo hit the bar and Paul Barker volleyed the rebound wide.
Uckfields' defence was ragged
and without organisation as panic set in and
Referee Eric Martin was
called on to wave yellow cards at regular intervals.
Gary Salter made it 2-0 after
15 minutes sliding in Mark Salters' cross
after a quickly worked short
corner with Doo.
The home side briefly threatened
when skipper Keith Rathborn set up Andy
Wren, but the striker dragged
his shot well wide of goal. When Redfern
failed to hold a corner,
Wren should have at least hit the target from four
yards.
Gary Salter claimed his second
of the match after 29 minutes with a
fortunate rebound off Handcock
after good work by Glyn Edmonds.
Within a minute, the home
side were back in the game. A harmless looking
free kick , knocked deep
into the Beeding box, was defended in a manner you
would not expect from an
under seven year old team and Rathborn provided the
pass for Wren to score with
ultimate ease.
Thirty eight minutes and
the wheels really had come off as Stuart Barry
tripped Gavin Schleider
in the area and Rathborn made short work of the
penalty.
A minute from the break Barry
lost possession just out side his own penalty
area and allowed Wren to
square the match without much difficulty.
Whatever was said by either
manager at half time did not work. Unless, of
course, both Managers told
their teams to go out a perform as badly as
possible. In which case
they succeeded.
The result was a second period
of such poor quality that a section of the
small crowd were reduced
to watching two burrowing earth worms, as it
provided greater entertainment
value.
Beeding skipper Steve Barber
was obviously bored with proceedings, as his
two footed challenge nearly
cut an Uckfield attacker in half. Referee Martin
waved another card - this
time red, and rightfully so, but even a man
advantage could not inspire
Uckfield to make more than one pass with out
giving the ball away. Still,
they did not have to wait long to get it back
again and, taking the positives
from the game, at least we did not have to
pay to get in.
