Upper Beeding 3:2 Hurstpierpoint
(H-T: 3-0)
Upper Beeding just about disposed of a spirited Hurstpierpoint
in the First
Round of the Division Three Cup on Saturday, setting
up a second round tie
at near neighbours Steyning Town in Round 2.
The second round game is likely to be scheduled for either
the second or
third Saturday of December and will be an appetizer for
their league clash -
at the Memorial Field - on Boxing Day Morning.
Our old friends, and now common visitors, Dr Jeckall and
Mr Hyde were in
evidence again as Beeding gave a performance of such
split personality, it
was difficult to believe that it was the same team in
each period.
The home side opened at pace and were unlucky not to open
the scoring after
just three minutes, Gary Salter heading wide Mark Salters'
near post corner.
Glyn Edmonds's 20 yard free kick beat both Hurst 'keeper
Mat Charman and his
near post before the teenage striker opened the scoring,
on the quarter
hour, beating Charman at his near post after a fortunate
deflection.
Five minutes later it was 2-0. Gary Salter rounded Charman,
following good
work by Mat Doo and Mark Salter but his shot, from an
acute angle was put
out for a corner by Ian Kentsleys' desperate lunge.
Doos' delivery to the far post was faultless as the ageless
Steve Barber
rose to power his header past Chapman.
Beeding were rampant and the quality of some of their
play was approaching
the standards set last year, with Gary Salter and Glyn
Edmonds ably
supported by Doo, Mark Salter, Stuart Barry and Simon
Friend - James. Things
seem more comfortable with John Burgess back in the pivotal
role in mid
field.
It was Barrys' quality delivery after 43 minutes that
proved too good for
Kentsley, as the experienced defender could only haul
down Gary Salter from
behind as it looked odds on that the striker would open
his account.
This he duly did from the resultant spot kick, placing
the ball to the right
of a static Charman.
It was Salters' last input into the game as a reoccurrence
of a neck injury
forced Manager Mick Barry to replace him with Lee Strange
during the
interval.
The second half began with Mr Hyde making his customary
appearance although,
in fairness to the Visitors, it was as much their industry
as Beedings
ineptitude which saw the tide change dramatically.
Hursts' Stu Tandy was getting forward much more on the
left, pushing Barry
back into more of a full back position than wing back
and he would have
pulled a goal back as early as the 50th minute, but for
the trusty left boot
of Beeding custodian Scott Redfern.
Paul Barker replaced Friend - James after 52 minutes,
showing his
frustration at being left out of the starting line up
by refusing to shake
Friend - James hand.
Hurstpierpoint pulled a goal back after 62 minutes. Tandy
beat Barry to the
ball and cut in and shot low. Redfern saved with his
feet, but Sam Swain,
following in, converted the easiest of chances.
Andy Hartless's long range effort was just too high and
Stu Tandy should
have forced Redfern into action from inside the box as
Hurstpierpoint
enjoyed a period of pressure which did not deliver a
just reward. Beeding,
on the other hand, could not string two consecutive passes
together.
Steve Fogden forced Redfern to rescue Beeding yet again,
blocking a 68th
minute certainty, before Dave Biggs reduced the arrears
further ten minutes
from the end.
Terry Gretton was left one on one with Biggs, and found
wanting as Biggs's
pace and power took him clear to beat Redfern with a
spanking finish.
Beeding did rally a little towards the end, with both
Doo and Strange
missing chances but at the final whistle, it was Hurstpierpoint
who should
have felt the unluckier of the two sides, not to have
at least taken the
game into extra time.
