Upper Beeding 5:1 Worthing Utd Res
(H-T: 2-1)
Just as the meagre crowd of 47 (plus one small black dog)
believed that they
had found a cure for insomnia, Upper Beeding woke up
and put their opponents
to bed. Something they should have done way before the
last quarter of this,
at times tedious, affair.
Beeding were missing the influential David Smith, who
failed a late fitness
test on his damaged thigh, and Mick Barry gave Glyn Edmonds
the chance to
start up front with Gary Salter.
And it was Salter who opened the scoring after eleven
minutes. Mat Doo,
preferred to Paul Barker in mid field, took the ball
into Worthings' penalty
area and the ball fell for Salter, whose weak shot found
the far corner of
the net despite the flailing hand of James Lee in the
visitors goal.
Edmonds could have doubled the advantage within a minute
but his header,
from Mark Salters' cross beat both Lee and the near upright.
Beeding looked comfortable enough, but the frustration
of the poor quality
of their final delivery in particular, was enough to
turn any discernible
cheers into groans.
Against the run of play, but with typical Beeding farce,
Worthing equalized
on thirty minutes. Steve Barbers' neat one - two saw
him threaten the
Worthing goal only for Lee to clear long to Tony Turton.
Not for the first
time this season, or even the tenth, a visiting striker
was free in between
Beedings' two marking defenders and with the sweeper
still in his opponents
half, Turton took his time before beating Scott Redfern
with a fierce left
foot shot.
Lee held a curling Edmonds shot before the young striker
gave Beeding an
interval lead stabbing in Gary Salters' header back across
goal from his
brothers' cross.
Doo should have given Beeding a two goal advantage within
two minutes of the
restart putting high and wide from a few feet and Barber
had an effort
cleared off the line as Beeding won the opening scrappy
skirmishes of the
half.
Lee Strange replaced Edmonds after 78 minutes and the
strikers impact was
immediate, albeit with a lot of help from Lee in the
Worthing goal.
Stranges' first touch put Gary Salter away on the left,
but although his
twenty yard shot lacked power, it proved too good for
Lee who allowed the
ball to slip through his hands and just across the line.
Barry replaced Gary Salter (neck) and Simon Friend - James
with Barker and
Mark Friend - James with ten minutes remaining, pushing
Doo into a strikers
role and a minute later Doo was on the score sheet, finishing
crisply, Jamie
Iresons' pass from Stuart Barrys' corner.
It was left to Strange to complete the scoring in the
final minute, rounding
the unfortunate Lee having beaten Ian Cook to Mark Salters'
through ball.
