St Francis 1:3 Upper Beeding
(H-T: 1-0)
The question was, which side of Upper Beedings' character would manifest
itself at St Francis on Saturday. The answer was both of them.
"Mr. Hyde" was first to show, as Beeding struggled to piece together
two
passes in succession and would have gone behind after just five minutes
but
for skipper Steve Barbers' last ditch tackle on Paul Higham when clean
through on goal.
Lee Stranges' weak effort on the quarter hour, following Gary Salters
flick,
hardly made St Francis 'keeper Darren Lehkyj bend down for the
ball and
then Salter himself (playing the target man role) was unable
to find a way
past Lehkyj.
St Francis opened the scoring after twenty nine minutes. Mark Friend
James
needlessly rolling the ball into the path of the onrushing Higham,
who set
up Chris Cook to finish past the unprotected Scott Redfern.
Paul Barkers' free kick on thirty four minutes was deftly headed back
across
goal by Barber but Stranges' flick was deflected wide by Simon Nicholl.
Barber did hit the bar late on in the half with a thunderous header
but, set
pieces aside, Beedings' movement and quality of distribution was again
poor.
Things did not look like improving after the break although, in fairness,
St. Francis had even less of the possession and looked unlikely to
break
into Beedings' half, let alone threaten their goal.
Mick Barry replaced Barker and Mark Friend-James with John Burgess and
Mat
Doo - both returning from long injury lay offs - after twenty minutes.
Mr. Hyde was also replaced by Dr. Jeckal and suddenly Beeding were up
and
running. The passing was crisper, the movement better and the equaliser
imminent.
Within seven minutes it had arrived Stuart Barry received the ball on
the
right, delivered early, Strange flicked on and Doo finished with a
powerful
first time volley from twelve yards.
Barry replaced Strange with Ian Barber and two minutes later, the visitors
were ahead. Gary Salter won the ball on the left and fed Ian
Barber, who
moved the ball wide to Barry on the right. The in form teenagers' delightful
chip left Lehkyj clutching thin air as the ball nestled in the far
corner of
his net.
Three in as many minutes as Gary Salter again won the ball with a fierce
tackle on Mark Gainey on the left hand side and spread the ball fifty
yards
to the other flank. Barry took the ball in his stride, went past Lee
Smith
and delivered a near post cross which Salter, who had made up enormous
ground, flicked over Lehkyj with a driving header.
Ian Barber could have added to the score with two minutes remaining
but
fired into the side netting after rounding Lehkyj. There was still
enough
time for referee Ian Butler to send Burgess from the field of play
for
allegedly swearing at one of his own players.
