Upper Beeding 4:1 Newhaven
(H-T: 3-0)

A much improved Upper Beeding performance condemned Newhaven to a 4-1 defeat
at the Memorial Field on Saturday.

Beeding got off to a flyer when, after seven minutes, skipper Steve Barber
rose unattended to power home Mark Friend-James's' corner.

Newhaven goalkeeper Ricky Hughes was beaten for a second time just four
minutes later. Mark Friend-James laid the ball into Lee Strange, whose
measured flick left Simon Friend-James with the relatively simple task of
sliding the ball under the advancing Hughes.

Midway through a half which had seen nothing from the visitors, Gary Salter
headed home brother Marks cross to give Beeding a three goal cushion.

It could have been worse for Newhaven as Mark Friend-James chipped over
after good work by Stuart Barry. Strange could not get on the end of Dave
Smiths' cross and then should have done better than sky Smiths' delicate
cross.

The interval proved entertaining to those queuing for a half time cuppa, as
Newhaven Manager Allan Winton colourfully ranted at his bewildered players
at a decibel rating which tested the control of noise act.

Although Newhaven did improve, it was not noticeable enough to trouble
Beeding whose defence looked tighter and mid field more mobile than it had
since September.

Gary Salter headed Simon Friend-James's' free kick straight at Hughes in the
opening onslaught, Strange was inches away from converting Mark
Friend-James's' cross and the rejuvenated Paul Barker saw his rasping 25
yard strike turned over.

Mark Woodward managed to clear a Gary Salters' header off the line before
Newhaven created their first real opportunity after sixty nine minutes. Mark
Friend-James lost out to Jay Roberts in the middle and fed the veteran Dave
Clarke who forced a good save from Scott Redfern.

Beeding extended their lead after 71 minutes with the best goal of the game.
Simon Friend-James worked well down the right and fed Barry. The teenager
cut in but his powerful shot was blocked by Martin Langley. The rebound fell
to Strange who deftly chipped the 6 foot 3 inch Hughes from ten yards.

The comfortable margin prompted Manager Mick Barry into a triple
substitution. Smith, Stuart Barry and Mark Friend-James making way for Ian
Barber, Justin Tarrant and Victor Analuwa.

Tarrant made an immediate impact pulling the ball back for Friend-James, who
fired just wide.

Newhaven consolation came after 83 minutes. Michael Sharpe fed Clarke just
inside the Beeding box and the portly striker made no mistake, drilling the
ball into Redferns' bottom left hand corner.

Their was still time for Peter Botting to fire over the Beeding cross bar
and, at the other end, Hughes to pull of a fine save from yet another Gary
Salter header.
