Upper Beeding 6:2 Arundel Res.
(H-T: 1-2)
It took only 97 seconds for normal service to be resumed at the Memorial
Field on Saturday when the Salter brothers contrived to lose the ball
in
their own penalty area for Joe Cairns to set up Daniel Kentch to open
the
scoring for Arundel reserves.
It was a familiar pattern being followed, as Beeding then proceeded
to
squander a series of reasonable chances. First Gary Salter headed over
a
Mark Friend - James Corner and then David Smith fired wide when set
up by
the same player.
Ian Barber was guilty of a glaring miss, heading over from close in
after
good work from a rejuvenated Paul Barker and then could not get on
the end
of Lee Stranges' driven cross two minutes later.
As Beeding pressed forward Chris Pendle, in the Arundel goal, was called
on
to save well from first Stuart Barry and then Smith, the rebound being
shot
onto the wrong side of Pendles' near post by Ian Barber.
As usual, Beeding were punished for their missed chances when, after
35
minutes, Jason Gealls' through ball found Kentch, who had got between
Steve
Barber and Gary Salter. The young striker took the ball on and rounded
Scott
Redfern to give the visitors a two goal advantage.
Gary Salter headed over his brother Marks' corner and Cairns fired wide
of
Redferns' goal before Beeding reduced the arrears with almost the last
action of the half. Friend-James's' corner was headed in from close
range by
Gary Salter and Arundels' Carl Broad was shown a red card for passing
his
opinion to referee Ian Butler.
Down to ten men, Arundel got off to the worst start possible to the
second
half when Gary Salter found Ian Barber on the left. His cross was laid
back
by Strange and Smith cracked in a left footed equaliser from 25 yards.
Smith watched another effort, from a similar distance, just clear the
bar
before Barkers' delightful ball inside Geall set Barry away. His bootless
delivery was headed home at the far post by Strange as Beeding took
the lead
for the first time.
The traffic was now one way as Beeding went for the kill. Barker was
again
involved on the half hour when his cross was met by Smith, who hit
the post,
Ian Barber, who hit the bar and then Smith again, who finally smashed
the
ball home from close range.
Beeding replaced Smith (rib injury) with Gareth Dutton before Stranges
cross
was met by Ian Barber for Beedings' fifth. Mark Friend-James' was awarded
his second yellow card of the game after an exchange of views with
a couple
of Arundel supporters.
Strange was replaced by Joe Bennett before Barry set up Ian Barber to
complete the scoring with a firm left foot strike past Pendle.
