Upper Beeding 5-1 Old Varndenians
Upper Beeding stormed into a third round Vernon Wentworth clash with
Midway
after casting aside the Brighton Leagues' Premier Division leaders
and
previously undefeated Old Varndenians at Steyning Town on Wednesday.
Again Mick Barrys' ever growing squad system was put to the test as
he
brought in Steph Gretton and Darren Jordan for the absent Steve Barber
and
Jamie Ireson and gave a place on the bench to new signing Mark Friend
-
James.
On a heavy pitch Beeding started the stronger with Stuart Barry and
Lee
Strange continually causing problems for the Varndenians defence.
But it was a defender who opened the scoring on twenty five minutes.
Dave
Smiths' deep corner, on the left was retrieved by Jordan who clipped
the
ball back across the goal for Gary Salter to rise and powerfully head
the
ball home.
Ten minutes later it was two nil when referee Geoff Hickson awarded
the
first of three penalties on the night. Mr Hickson saw a push in the
Varndenians' box which eluded everyone else and Gary Salter sent the
keeper
the wrong way from the spot.
Stuart Barry made it 3-0 on 57 minutes, latching onto John Burgess'
through
ball and curling a right foot shot into the bottom corner of the net.
Two minutes later Referee Hickson adjudged Jordan guilty of handball
in the
penalty area and Scott Redfern was unlucky not to keep out the subsequent
spot kick.
Barry restored Beedings three goal advantage on seventy four minutes
when he
picked up Mark Salters cross and fired home from an acute angle.
Mick Barry sent on Matt Doo for Strange, Friend - James for Paul Barker
and
Joel Bennett for Stuart Barry and Doo was unfortunate not to score
when his
drive cannoned off an upright and then had a "goal" disallowed for
off side.
As the game moved into stoppage time, Friend - James was unceremoniously
hauled down for the third spot kick of the evening and Gary Salter
stepped
up to complete his first hat trick of the year.
