Upper Beeding 5-1 Rogate
Upper Beeding duly completed the league double over a physical Rogate
side
without really getting out of third gear. They were not even out of
neutral
when goalkeeper Scott Redfern slipped over while collecting a through
ball
with barely a minute played, only for Rogate striker Craig McCathy
to slice
the ball wide of Beedings' gaping goal from barely six yards.
The home side responded immediately with Wayne Potbury feeding Lee Strange
and Rogate keeper Matt Eames being forced tip round the diminutive
striker's
drive.
Strange did open his account after 14 minutes when Mark Salters' deep
free
kick was superbly headed back across goal by Steve Barber and Strange
was on
hand to bundle the ball in from close range.
Although the conditions were difficult, Beedings' normally smooth passing
style appeared to have stayed at home as they continually needlessly
gave
away possession with only Barber and Gary Salter at the back showing
any
real form at all.
Rogate were level on 23 minutes. David Smith committing a needless
foul
centrally, 25 yards out. As Redfern lined up his wall on one post,
the
Rogate centre half chipped the ball into the opposite corner.
Manager Mick Barry fumed on the side line as half time approached and
there
was no sign of any improvement.
Not for the first time Barrys' half time reminder to his troops, that
they
had set certain standards, which had to be maintained, did not fall
on deaf
ears.
Start Barry replaced the injured Matt Doo (back strain) during the interval
and was on the score sheet after 52 minutes. Barber headed forward
for
Strange to chest down for Barry to side foot home from 12 yards.
On the hour it was 3-1. Skipper John Burgess pushed the ball through
the
Rogate back line and goalkeeper Eames found Potburys' presence to much
to
handle as Potbury took the ball off him and slotted home from a narrow
angle.
Two minutes later Eames was in disarray once more as he tried to clear
a
back pass. Stranges' pace and power charged down the clearance and
his
follow up secured his second of the afternoon.
Manager Barry replaced Strange with Jamie Ireson slotting into a back
three
as Beeding went from 4-3-3 to a 5-3-2 formation and Lewis Partridge
replaced
a limping Potbury, leaving Glyn Edmonds to go from right back, to right
wing
back to Striker in just six minutes.
And he could and should have had a hat trick in the last 20 minutes
of the
game mis-kicking Partridges' pull back and missing the target after
good
work by Barry. He did get on the score sheet a couple of minutes from
the
end when Paul Barker ran at the Rogate defence and slipped the ball
to
Edmonds who passed the ball under the advancing Eames.
The final word has to go to Beedings normally skilful play maker Paul
Barker
who said after the game, " I would just like to apologise to the seventy
or
so spectators who must have thought the were watching a dog with a
balloon.
